Cosplay by Guy Vinciguerra
Cosplay  by Guy Vinciguerra
$25.00, 2004, 60pp, paperback, 280g, 0-9579094-1-1
Photographs of Japanese (mostly young girls) who dress in outlandish self-created styles and hang out in places like the Harajuku and Shibuya districts of Tokyo. Rebels in a non-rebelious society. Slaves to their own trends. Australian engineer and avid photographer, Guy Vinciguerra, visits Tokyo with his camera and a sense for dramatic photos with sharp colors. The result becomes an exhibition at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and this fine and disquieting book. One or two photos on most pages. This is not the Japan of modern industry or of sun-blackened farmers raising rice. But this is at least as real. more here

Timescapes Japan
Timescapes Japan "A Pinhole Journey" by Edward Levinson
Yen 3,000, 2006, 107pp, hardcover,250x240mm, 4-8179-2098-X Captions are in English. Other text is bilingual.
From an interview by Gregg Kemp at Pinhole Visions: "One of the first thoughts I had while viewing and reading Edward Levinson's new book "Timescapes Japan - A Pinhole Journey", was how much my own photography has been influenced by him. The influence isn't so much in the images themselves as it is in Ed's approach to pinhole photography. Whether it is the influence of Japanese culture or perhaps Ed's personal nature, his approach to his work is thoughtful and meditative. And his photographs of the last several years reflect those qualities of his style. This approach is also apparent in his sparse, but elequent writing that accompanies the book. This book is a collection of images you will want to return to often." Also see Levinson's new book published by Iwanami Shoten (in Japanese) 978-4-00-022275-4.
