The best popular magazines published in English for native English speakers in Japan
Published all or partly in English. Some are free, some are not
this page is underconstruction. much of the content is copied from another page and will be changed soon

We think we know all of what is published here for gaijin but magazines (paper and online) keep changing, so please tell us at IMC in Tokyo if you have found a great new, small, useful periodical in English. No blogs please, no email newsletters. This page IS NOT a catalog. We do have many catalog pages that list books or periodicals, but this is not one of them. Most of the magazines are published in or are available in Tokyo (several at our Iriya office) but almost every major Japanese city has something in English worth looking at regularly. If you know of a good local magazine that we do not list, tell us. Mags that are 100% in Japanese do not qualify. Bilingual mags are okay. Filipino, French, etc. okay, but please bare in mind that we are fluent only in English.

Not for Free

Tokyo Journal - TJ is the oldest surving English expat magazine in Japan. Now a 54-page glossy quarterly, it started as a cheap monthly tabloid. It has been owned or edited by dozens of people and companies. Somehow TJ has survived the economic and cultural ups and downs that have given rise to (perhaps better) magazines, and then killed those magazines. TJ has subscribers both in Japan and overseas, and it is distributed to the main English bookstores throughout Japan. You can also subscribe to TJ from us. In Japan details.     Outside Japan details.

Free

There was a time when free meant junk, advertising only, or promotion for some religion, government or other special interest. Largely true today but Tokyo has several "free" mags that are interesting enough to pay for. Free mags also usually offer a subscription if you really need.

Metropolis - Weekly, 66 pages, this is the King of classified sleaze. Boy wants girl .... or whatever combination suits you. Plenty of useful info too. And, there is good editing, articles worth reading. Available at supermarkets, clubs, bars, etc. frequented by expats. Is sure to be picked up quickly.

Tokyo Notice Board - Weekly, 62 pages. Plenty of ads. Not much in the way of articles. Available at supermarkets, clubs, bars, etc. frequented by expats.
