Art of Japan

Paintings, Prints and Screens - Selected articles from Orientations 1984-2002

Art of Japan
In addition to its several successful volumes on Chinese furniture, jade, ceramics, bronzes, Chinese and Central Asian textiles and Tibetan art,  ORIENTATIONS has in this book reprinted a selection of 67 articles and reviews on Japanese paintings, prints and screens published in the journal since 1984.

The 67 articles provide a chronological and stylistic history of Japanese painting traditions. Examined in detail are the significant impact of Buddhism and the emergence during the Heian period of the yamato-e style. Discussions reveal how this native style matured during the Kamakura period, a time also characterized by Zen ideology and how this influence transformed into a distinctive Japanese tradition during the Muromachi period. Following the civil wars a new energetic and luxurious artistic spirit was sought during the Momoyama period with an even greater blossoming and diversification of styles during the Edo period.

Lavishly illustrated with 679 colour plates and 116 black and white images, the volume is a unique source of reference for anyone interested in the field.

Dear reader,

It is seldom that I praise a book. I am no art lover; I'm just a bookseller in Tokyo and I do have this book in stock but only a few copies. So, why am I spending time making this webpage? I just think this is one of those rare books that deserves to be better known. There are plenty of books on Japan and art, but few of this scope and caliber. For decades Orientations magazine has been publishing on the arts of Asia. This book has been built from selected articles from Orientations 1984-2002. The 60+ articles expertly cover almost every facet of Japanese art of the periods covered. Not today's modern art, but the true foundations upon which today's arts are based. The photographs are superb. Our scans of the cover do not do justice to the book and we leave you wishing for photos of the inside pages. Sorry, please buy the book. Page size A4 (slightly larger and narrower than 'letter size', 527 pages, 1,950 grams, paper cover. Price US$120.00 (includes mailing overseas, includes tax if you are in Japan). The Buy button on the right connects to our PayPal shopping cart. PayPal is fast and safe. They accept payments from many sources including Visa and Mastercards. If you need some other payment method, tell us. We accept Yen and various types of transfers.
